To better help you prepare for your next interview, today I am giving advice on how to answer the interview question: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

This is a difficult question for three main reasons. First, the employer is looking to see if your goals and aspirations match up closely to the goals of the company and the specific position for which you are applying. Your goals may not completely align with those of the company, but in an interview you want to emphasize the goals and values that match the company rather than point out the areas where you differ.

Second, the way you answer this question can communicate several things about your personality and character to the employer without you explicitly showing them your character. With this being said, in this question you really want to be yourself. Don't fake your way into a job because 2 months later, you may end up disliking your job. So be yourself when you answer this question and show passion for the things that bring you excitement.

Lastly, this question is difficult because no one knows where they will be in 5 years... and this type of questions enters into a hypothetical world. I would suggest answering this question with your ideal outcome. Explain why you would like this situation and if possible, give reasons or examples of how this is a possible outcome. For example you could say; I would like to be the regional manager in 5 years... and I think once you see me manage others, you will see that I am talented enough to handle that level of responsibility.

Keep in mind that usually an employer is looking for personality just as much as ability, so relax and let your personality shine. You'll do great!
